Is Dental Work While Pregnant Safe for You and the Baby?

Having a baby is one of the most exhilarating things that we can do in life. Babies change the body completely, shifting organs and bones while utilizing nutrients to build an entirely new creature. It goes without saying that the health of the mother is important for the baby to be healthy, too. Some people believe that once they are pregnant, they cannot visit a dentist like we have here, but in reality, it is one of the most important times to come see us.
Oral Health = Body Health
Just like how the eyes are the windows to the soul, your oral health is a window to your body health. If you're experiencing high stress, your teeth will show that. If you have malnutrition, your gums will show that. If you're experiencing dry mouth, we can help to find the reason for it (sometimes caused from dehydration or diabetes). What's more, is that your teeth are some of the most vulnerable pieces of your body, and this makes them susceptible to things like infections, which can spread from your mouth to your blood stream (and cross the placenta into the baby) if not treated.
Come See Us in Your Second Trimester
Between weeks 14 and 20 is usually the best time to come see us (unless you have an infection and need immediate treatments). This is the best time because you're passed the sickness stage, which has likely weakened your teeth, and it is before the period where you cannot lay back comfortably for long periods of time. Further, if you are experiencing any oral sensitivity, bleeding gums, or general discomfort as a side effect from your pregnancy, we can help to relieve the issue.
You're already building a person, there is no reason you should be uncomfortable at the same time. To find out more about how we can help and when it is a good time for you to come see us, give us a call today.
