Why Your Child Needs Braces

Posted on 10/10/2022 by Evan
Why Your Child Needs BracesWhen your child's teeth are developing, it is important to look out for any teeth developmental issues so that your dentist can correct them early. One of the correctional methods to consider is braces. Braces come in handy when trying to correct jaw or teeth misalignment. Braces are fixations on the teeth that apply pressure over time, correcting their positioning. There are several reasons why your child would need braces.

Crossbite

A crossbite is a dental condition where the jaws don't align as expected. There are three types of crossbites: posterior, anterior, and buccal crossbite. A posterior crossbite happens when the upper teeth rest inside the lower teeth, which is abnormal because, normally, the upper teeth are wider than the lower teeth. An anterior crossbite happens on the front teeth when the upper front teeth rest inside the lower front teeth. A buccal crossbite occurs when the back teeth do not align with the lower teeth completely, sitting outside of them, nearer the cheeks, than they should.

Tooth Crowding

Tooth crowding happens when the teeth do not fit on the jaw. This then causes some to teeth to erupt from higher in the jaw.

Underbites and Overbites

An underbite happens when the upper jaw is inside the lower jaw, extending the lower jaw forward. An overbite, on the other hand, occurs when the front jaw extends too far in front.

Crooked Teeth

There are different reasons that children can get crooked teeth. They could be genetic, but also due to habits like thumb sucking, poor oral hygiene, tongue thrusting, and trauma on the tooth. Crooked teeth are mainly an issue when permanent teeth grow, and some develop around unextracted baby teeth. These teeth end up posing a problem during brushing or flossing since your child's toothbrush cannot reach the crowded areas.
