Does My Child Have an Open Bite?

Kids dental examAll parents love to look at the smiles of their children because smiling and laughing are some of the joys of parenting. When you look at your children smiling, do you notice their brilliant white teeth, or do you notice that their teeth do not seem to meet? Here is some information about open bites, what they are, and how they are treated.

What Is an Open Bite?

When most adults bite down, their bottom teeth come down about halfway over their lower teeth. However, some children and adults have malocclusions, which means that the upper and lower teeth do not fit together correctly. One example of a malocclusion is an open bite. If your child has an open bite, their upper and lower teeth may not meet together at all, leaving space - or openness - between their upper jaw and their lower jaw.

Open bites are caused by a combination of tooth placement and spacing, as well as jaw position. If an open bite is not treated, your child may have trouble eating and speaking and may also have jaw pain. Many people with open bites also tend to clench or grind their teeth at night.

Treating an Open Bite

The treatment for open bites depends largely on how severe they are. Most children with an open bite have a mild or medium open bite. Both of these conditions can be treated with braces or clear aligners, both of which correct tooth problems. If jaw issues have caused the open bite, they may need to wear an appliance, such as expanders, before they get braces or aligners. Serious open bite malocclusions may require surgery, although this is rare.

With the proper treatment, your child will never have another issue with an open bite. If you are not sure whether your child has an open bite or not, our dentist will be able to give you more information. Why not reach out to us today to schedule an appointment for your child?
