What Is Diastema?

Posted on 6/5/2023 by Evan
What Is Diastema?Diastema is a noticeable space between the teeth. In most cases, it occurs between the front teeth but can also happen on other teeth. Sometimes the spaces are small and less noticeable, but they can also present themselves as big spaces, creating a cosmetic concern. The good thing is that you can close these gaps through orthodontic procedures. This may involve braces, veneers, Invisalign, and dental bonding. Continue reading to learn more about diastema.

Causes of Diastema

Gaps between the teeth may occur due to various reasons. Diastema may run in the family, which you cannot escape. Sometimes there can be a mismatch between the teeth size and the jaw size, creating extra spaces between the teeth. Bad habits in children can also cause diastema. For instance, thumb sucking during early and late childhood pulls the teeth forward, creating spaces. Incorrect swallowing reflex is another habit that can create gaps between the teeth. When you press your front teeth with your tongue when swallowing, you will likely push the teeth forward, creating gaps.

In adults, diastema is likely to occur as a result of gum disease. Periodontal disease involves the infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. In severe cases, it can lead to tooth loss, creating gaps.

Can Diastema Cause Oral Issues?

Living with gaps between the teeth can put you at risk of oral issues. Diastema creates spaces for food and debris to collect. This results in harmful bacteria accumulating along the gum line and teeth. If ignored, it can attack the tooth enamel or irritate the gums, making you prone to tooth decay and gum disease.

In addition, diastema can affect neighboring teeth. When there is a gap between the teeth, the adjacent teeth shift, causing misalignment. This can affect your bite and smile. Visit our office, and our orthodontists will determine the underlying dental health issue to prevent future complications.
