50% of Americans have periodontal disease, which is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease starts off as plaque, an opaque film which eventually hardens, forming tartar or calculus.
New Dental Technology
An amazing breakthrough in periodontal treatment is called LANAP® Procedure, and is now available at Thurston Oaks Dental in Vancouver, WA. If you have been told you need scalpel and suture gum surgery, there's a laser alternative you need to learn about.
We are the only office in SW Washington to offer this procedure, which increases the chance of keeping your teeth. Call our office for a complimentary Periolase consultation and give yourself a reason to smile.
Watch & Learn About Laser Treatment for Gum Disease
What is Periodontal Disease?
Calcium deposits contain bacteria which infect the gums. In early stages, this is called gingivitis, characterized by swollen, red gums that bleed when you brush. You may experience bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth as well. Gingivitis progresses to Periodontitis when unchecked, a much more serious form of the disease, where periodontal pockets are formed, separating teeth from the gums and supporting bone structure. Without treatment, the pockets deepen; infection becomes more severe, resulting in tooth loss.
To repair the damage is to get rid of the infection and close up the pockets. Until now, that meant surgery and sutures. But today, many dentists, including Dr. Alan Snodgrass, offer the LANAP® Protocol, a patient-friendly, minimally-invasive laser gum treatment. This procedure is a great improvement over standard gum surgery. Periolase is the first FDA-approved non-surgical periodontal therapy available.
A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infection is cleared away. The procedure is fast: It takes just two 2-hour sessions. Dr. Snodgrass will treat one half of your mouth at each session, and many feel good enough to go right back to work afterwards.
What Is the Process for LANAP?
First, Dr. Snodgrass will take x-rays to make a definitive diagnosis and to determine the extent of your periodontal infection. When you return for your first LANAP® Procedure treatment at our office in Vancouver, WA, you'll receive a local anesthetic to eliminate any possible discomfort. A general anesthetic isn't necessary, because the LANAP® Procedure is much less traumatic. In just two sessions, you will receive laser treatment for gum disease, without surgery!
Is Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy Safe?
LANAP® gives better, longer-lasting results. In fact, 98% of LANAP® treated patients remain stable after five years.
After your LANAP® treatment, most patients feel good enough to eat right after the procedure. There's less than 24 hour recovery period, so you won't lose time from work.
The LANAP® Procedure is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Plavix or aspirin. For more information, please visit www.LANAP.com. To schedule an appointment with our laser periodontist call our office today.
